How Much Do Acting Classes Cost in Brisbane? Understanding the Investment.

People ask me this question all the time, and I completely understand why.

Adding any extracurricular activity to a family budget is a real decision. You want a straight answer on price, and you deserve one.

But there's a distinction worth making before we get to numbers. A hamburger is a cost. You pay, you eat, it's gone. A good acting class, one with real structure, a clear process and a genuine philosophy of personal growth, is an investment. What you get back compounds over years, not minutes.

Let's cover both: the numbers and the investment behind them.

What acting classes typically cost in Brisbane

Across Brisbane, drama and acting classes for kids, teens and adults range widely depending on the school, format and level.

Weekly term classes across Brisbane range from around $28 a session for a one-hour class up to $58 for a 90-minute class, depending on length, age group and studio.

Holiday workshops typically run around $80 a day, or $160 to $400 for a multi-day program, depending on length and provider.

For adults, the range opens up further. Beginner and introductory courses typically run $50 to $70 a session over a four to eight week block. At the top end, audition-only studio programs move into a different bracket altogether. NIDA's own year-long Actors Studio, for example, costs over $5,000 a year once you include the audition fee.

Why the price range is so wide

That range exists because "acting classes" can mean very different things depending on who's running them. Some schools are led by industry professionals with a company of working actors, directors and casting contacts behind them, genuinely plugged into stage and screen work. Others are run by graduates testing out the idea of owning a school for the first time. Both have a place. The experience, and the outcomes, look very different.

The Australian Acting Academy has been running for over 31 years. At the helm is a leadership team with over 80 combined years of experience. Our Foundation classes are open and welcoming to any child who wants to give acting a go, no audition required. Alongside those, we run Advanced Extension classes that are audition only, built for students who are serious about the craft and want to be encouraged to go further in skills and personal development. Our graduates regularly go on to study at Australia's top drama schools and universities, including NIDA, VCA, WAAPA, Griffith and QUT.

That track record comes from three decades of refining a curriculum, training coaches and staying genuinely connected to the industry our students are aiming for.

Being a family-created business (my own children attended, and some still work here), we offer scholarships for families who need them through the school system, and we value deeply the community we've built over three decades.

That community runs further than people often realise. Graduates regularly come back to coach for us, or use our premises to develop their own creative projects. Right now, we have two feature films in development on site, from former students Tristan Barr and Pacharo Mzembe.

What you're actually investing in

Anyone can compare hourly rates. Harder to see from the outside: a structured pathway of skill development, built on a philosophy of personal growth, delivered by a coach who knows how to draw the best out of a student.

Sometimes it takes a year. Sometimes big results show up in as little as nine weeks, one term. Parents tell me their child speaks up now, makes friends more easily, handles things they couldn't before. Adult students describe the same shift: less rehearsing what they're about to say, more willingness to just say it.

We have students who've stayed with us for eleven years. The growth compounds, term after term. It's a return most extracurricular activities can't match.

The trial class

Before signing up for a term anywhere, most schools should offer some way to try before you commit, either a free trial or a one-off fee, so you're not locked into ongoing payments before you've actually tried it.

At the Academy, trial classes are currently free for kids and teens, and paid for adults. No lock-in either way. We want to make sure we're a good match for each other before you join us.

You get to see the structure and philosophy in action for yourself. We get to meet you, or your child, and make sure we're the right fit.

Most parents who come for a trial end up staying for years because of what they see their child do in that first session.
