Term 3: Comedy for Stage & Screen

Why comedy? Apart from the fact that making people laugh, and laughing ourselves, is one of the most fun things any human can do, it is good for your health. Laughter is the best medicine, right? Yet that is not the reason we do comedy at the Australian Acting Academy. We do it because we know that by understanding how to act comedy, you instantly become a better actor in all styles of acting.
It is the hardest thing to master, that is why it is woven through our entire curriculum, from junior classes to our highest level of extension class, and why our students present themselves with such confidence. At the end of this term the students will have had nine weeks to develop skits, performed jokes, if you like, and generally under one minute long

  • Become part of the safety net ensemble, allowing you to feel safe to take a creative risk
  • Find out why people laugh and how to capitalise on it
  • Find out what the "it" is when people say "I don't get it", and correct it before it happens
  • Learn the AAA script comedy formula
  • Become the expert in funny filters (things you learn to spice up your comedy with)
  • Design a skit, rehearse it and film it for green screen!
  • Design a skit to be performed live on stage!
  • Develop stage comedy skills using character, voice, body, and sound effects
  • And so much more!

Week 1
 Build Your Ensemble

You will start to have fun with comedy improv while you stretch your comedy muscle to get ready for the next week. You will learn that a skit is a visual joke, and how to make sure they work.

Week 2
What Is A Sub Skit?

You will start throwing ideas around, seeing what sticks, and with the expert guidance of your coaches, find the jokes that will be best to film, and what is best for stage.

Week 3
Comedy Formula

A near mathematical formula that shows how and why things are funny. You will also learn the 7 funny filters that when added to a skit, guarantee to make it funnier

Week 4
Time To Create

We will then flesh out your screen skit. You will be guided to find the funniest moment and get to the funny fast. You will rehearse and tweak until you have the comedic timing down

Week 5
Lights, Camera, Action!

You will come with costumes and props that you need to make your skit funny. We will try and bring a few things to help too. Then you will  get in front of the camera to capture your skit.

Week 6
Take 2

Now you can see how working with a live audience will give you some more options to make an audience laugh. When we say audience we mean your parents, so they will laugh, even if we have to tickle them.

Week 7
Stage Time

You will work with your coach and get a skit up for the stage. You will find ways to make it funnier, reacting off audience feedback and how to add in sfx and stagecraft to get the gag across.

Week 8

This is where you perfect and polish your skit. Milking it for laughs so that your parents and friends can get the most out of it in the final week.

Week 9
Show Time

You will have time to get the skit rehearsed, add in any props that you decided to bring to add to the show, then it’s time to welcome your family and friends in to watch you being funny.

What our AAA Family has to say...

One of the best days was when my son came home from his Australian Acting Academy class; we were just going about our general business and without prompting he said, "Mum, I love it at AAA. When I'm there, I really feel like; like 'ME'.
- Jo Behlau (parent)
The Australian Acting Academy is amazing. From to classes to camps I have found a safe place and a family to express my creative side. I have learnt so much with the AAA and really did have the best 5 days of my life on camp. I would 100% recommend the AAA to any aspiring actors and artists looking to take their skills to the next level and find not just a house, but a home.
- Louis Boland (student)

The team at AAA are outstanding! They go above and beyond to help each child reach their full potential. From weekly classes, extension and camps I cannot fault them. My daughter just got back from her first camp. The positive impact 4 days has had on her is amazing. I could go on and on with how happy I am with the care she received and friends she made, and the fun she had.

- Jo Trull (Parent)
My son has been going to the AAA classes for a few years now and loves them more than ever. He has just returned from the spring camp, which was of course, awesome. I think he talked non-stop for 24 hours about the activities, the people, the fun etc and immediately wanted me to book the summer camp! AAA provide such a warm, nurturing environment for all involved that ensures that each child shines and goes from strength to strength. Thanks so much to Brendan, Kareena and the team for all your hard work.
- FionA CURRAN (Parent)
Our daughter loves her Acting Classes with the Australian Acting Academy. I've never seen her face light up as much as when she talks about her classes and what they did.
- Madonna dunn (parent)

Truely an amazing place for creatives! Even if you think you don't want to act I would still highly suggest to do some class or do there amazing camps! It helps you build confidence and truely grow as a person. JUST GO AND TRY IT ALREADY!!!
